A Mother's day.

All traditions holidays and superstitions have an origin. I love playing the detective - researching where they started and why. Why do we celebrate mothers in may?

I went and googled that s#!t.

The American beginning was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became official in 1914. Following her mother's death, Anna wanted to honor the sacrifices mothers made for their children. Eventually, she became disgusted with the commercialization of the holiday. She felt that Mother's Day was not about flowers, candy, or cards and she tried to have it removed from the national calendar to no avail. Alas, here we are commercial or not, giving what we think our Mom's would love.

The question is what do we want?

I watched a video today where women were interviewed and asked what they really wanted for mother's day. The top answers were sleep, a day alone, and to not make any decisions regarding another human other than themselves.

While I adore my children when they were young all of the above would have been a dream come true. Now, as one is off to college and the other about to graduate college, a day with them would be dreamy.

So no matter where you are in the kid spectrum, take the day for yourself or enjoy them.  Either way, it will be good.
